Belladonna and her Passion
What is Goth? Goth is not a tangible thing. It can't be described in precisiveness, but I can say that it's a state of mind, feelings, taste, food, theatre, lifestyle and the people around you.
Many times I have been annoyed and angered when I come across little 14-year olds that claim to be Goths....No! No! No! What the hell is that? It's not considered Goth if that someone uses their mommy's makeup and eyeliner, or if they listen to and love Marilyn Manson and Kittie, or even the basic fact of dressing up in black!
I love questioning these people when asking them, "What kind of message do you think Siouxsie Sioux spread in the 70s?" Or better yet, "Do you think Rozz Williams was the epitome of Christian Death, and why?" I get a kick out of those confused faces. You see, these kids that listen to their new rap-metal crap don't know anything about literature, in a sense of Byron or Hawthorne; fashion that goes beyond Hot Topic (give me a break), or worse, music. They have no fucken clue that Siouxsie, The Cure (old), Velvet Underground, Christian Death, Bauhaus and many others are goth bands.
Goth derived somewhere in the 70s when the rest of the world was exploding in punk, and the rest of the lame asses were listening to disco. Like the punks, Goths were rebellious and wanted to differ. In essence, they favored the gloom and doom of their culture. They favored the black clothing was layered over many pieces of clothing (think bloomers, petticoats, skirts, shawls, true bone corsets, witches boots, etc). There was the big huge teased hair of the likes of Siouxsie Sioux, Skinny Puppy and The Cure. :) I know the older Goth people know what the hell I am talking about.
So, in essence, buying clothes from Hot Topic or any other mainstream chain store doesn't make anyone goth. I can be called a bitch, but I don't take imposters lightly, especially those who think they are Goth, listen to crap metal and have no idea where Goth originated. |
Gothic Literature
Classic writers and poets, along with folklore, contributed much to the Gothic society. Writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, Washington Irving and Nathaniel Hawthorne all contributed to the inspiration for classic gothic literature. Poets such as Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, Lord George Gordon Byron, William Butler Yeats, and Percy Bysshe Shelley all as well did their contribution to Gothic Romanticism.

Famous Monsters
Folklore has always been a major part of any culture and the underground Gothic scene doubtlessly adopted this. Vampyres, to many, represents some forbidden creature that is considered to be vile, yet very erotic and mysterious. I myself am in awe of vampryes, blood and razor sharp canines. Needless to say, I have also fantasized about the romantic aspect of these creatures and the beautiful thought of being an Immortal. To me, villanious vampyres and romantic vampyres all suit my tastes.
Monsters and other creatures also draw my attention, for an example, werewolves, zombies and demons. Watching classic black and white horror movies and tastefully redone modern horror movies is a great past-time for me. |
Music that moves.............
Music, like anything else, moves people. I find myself listening to a melancholic song and it will bring me to tears. Music gives the Gothic subculture such a big influence. Take for example, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Christian Death, Bauhaus and even the Cure.
Siouxsie and the Banshees came into the world with such an intense sensuality, it just blew my mind when I first heard of them. They had such an imagination that broke all the rules. The Cure, being one of my most beloved bands, gave me hope and inspiration on writing poetry. The Cure's wonderfully melodic and poetic music brought joy and uplifted my spirits, yet on the next song, they brought me down to tears. Another band that inspires me a great deal because they are so melodic and yet depressing, Clan of Xymox. I love them! With that being said, I admire and respect them for musicians; I hold them in high regards.
Victoriana......the bygone era
The Victorian/Edwardian eras were the most beautiful eras since the beginning of time. Architecture, literature, dress and etiquette all contributed to its beauty.
In awe, I ponder how a female was expected to act like a Lady, how her body was shaped by vigorous and painful cinching of bone corsets; pompous, yet beautiful dresses that accentuated the female form; antiquities and when gentlemen were real gentlemen.
The writings of famous Victorian authors and poets charmed many a heart; how life was more simpler then, and yet fine with precious antiquities.
Lustrious Victorian architecture amazes me. Old Gothic cemeteries, angels, and crypts just add the charm. No wonder how many can fall in love with this era. |

Bela Lugosi made the vampyre a sensual creature
Count Dracula is one of my favorite vampyre characters.
